Christmas Tree Size Guide
A tree that is too tall hits the ceiling. A tree that is too short disappears in the room. This guide walks you from your ceiling height to a size that actually fits — the same math we use when we answer sizing emails.
The short answer
| Ceiling height | Tree height that fits | What it looks like in the room |
|---|---|---|
| 7 ft / 2.1 m | 5–5.5 ft | Low ceilings and apartments. Topper sits just under the ceiling. |
| 8 ft / 2.4 m | 6.5–7 ft | The most common pairing. Leaves room for a star or angel. |
| 9 ft / 2.7 m | 7.5 ft | Open-plan living rooms. Tall but still grounded. |
| 10 ft / 3 m | 8–8.5 ft | High ceilings, stairwells, double-height entries. |
| 12 ft+ / 3.6 m+ | 10 ft | Vaulted rooms and commercial spaces. |
How to measure in three steps
1. Measure the ceiling
Floor to ceiling, at the spot where the tree will stand — not in the middle of the room. Sloped ceilings and ceiling fans can cut your usable height by a foot or more.
2. Subtract for the topper
A star or angel usually adds 8–12 in. If you plan to use one, subtract 12 in. If not, subtract 6 in so the top tip is not pressed against the ceiling.
3. Measure the floor space
Measure the width of the free floor area, then subtract 12 in (30 cm) to leave walking room. That number is the widest tree you can fit. A slim tree at the same height is roughly 20–25% narrower than a full one, and a flatback or corner tree uses about half the floor space — if the space is narrow, shape matters more than height.
Every height we make
| Height | Available in | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 24 in / 2 ft | Mini Tabletop Tree | Desks, console tables, studios, dorm rooms |
| 4 ft / 1.2 m | Slim Pink Pop-Up Tree | Bedrooms, small apartments, second trees |
| 5 ft / 1.5 m | Flocked Fraser Fir, Slim Pink, Crooked Tree | Apartments and lower ceilings |
| 6 ft / 1.8 m | Nordmann Fir PE, Flocked Fraser Fir, Slim Pink | The everyday living-room tree |
| 7 ft / 2.1 m | Nordmann Fir PE, Flocked Fraser Fir, Slim Pink | 8–9 ft ceilings, the main tree |
| 8 ft / 2.4 m | Nordmann Fir PE, Flocked Fraser Fir | High ceilings, large living rooms |
| 10 ft / 3 m | Nordmann Fir PE | Vaulted rooms, foyers, commercial displays |
Shape matters as much as height
Two trees can be the same height and still take up very different amounts of floor. Before you buy, decide which of these you actually need:
- Full: the classic wide profile. Fills a corner or the center of a room, and needs the most floor space.
- Slim: the same height with a narrower spread. Good for hallways, narrow living rooms, and next to furniture.
- Pop-up or collapsible: built on a frame that opens and folds flat. Fastest to put up and store, and the shape stays consistent year to year.
What tip counts actually tell you
Tip count is the number of individual branch tips on the tree. More tips per foot means fewer visible gaps and a fuller silhouette from close up.
| Nordmann Fir PE | Tips |
|---|---|
| 6 ft | 4,500 |
| 7 ft | 6,750 |
| 8 ft | 8,100 |
| 10 ft | 11,750 |
Our Flocked Fraser Fir uses a different build: molded PE tips on the outer branches for realism, PVC inside for volume. It reads as dense rather than listing a single tip number.
Small spaces and tabletop trees
If the room cannot take a 5 ft tree, do not force one in. Our 24-inch tabletop trees arrive decorated and sit on a wrapped base — about 24 in / 60 cm tall including the topper, including ornaments and topper already in place. They are the right answer for studios, offices, and second rooms.
Frequently asked questions
What size Christmas tree fits an 8 ft ceiling?
A 6.5–7 ft tree. That leaves 12 in for a topper or 18 in of breathing room without one.
Can I put a 7 ft tree under a 7 ft ceiling?
No. The stand alone adds several inches, and the top tip would touch the ceiling. Use a 5–5.5 ft tree in a 7 ft room.
Is a 7 ft or 7.5 ft tree better?
For an 8 ft ceiling, 7 ft. For a 9 ft ceiling, 7.5 ft. The difference is entirely about how much headroom you want above the topper.
How wide is a tree?
Width depends on shape, not just height. Measure your floor space, subtract 12 in for walkway, and compare that number with the width listed on the product page before ordering. If you are unsure, message us with your ceiling height and room width and we will tell you which of ours fits.
Do I need to measure for the stand?
The stand is included and sits under the tree. Measure to the ceiling from the floor and subtract 12 in — that already covers it.
